Diabetes
Diabetes is a condition that occurs when your blood glucose (blood sugar) is too high. Glucose is your main source of energy for your body. Your body can make glucose, but glucose also comes from the food you eat. Insulin is the hormone made by the pancreas that acts like a bus to help glucose get into your cells to be used for energy. If you have diabetes, your body doesn’t make enough, or any insulin, or doesn’t use insulin properly. Glucose then stays in your blood and doesn’t reach your cells and can lead to many health issues.
Types of diabetes include Type 1 diabetes, Type 2 diabetes, Latent autoimmune diabetes of adults (LADA), gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) and Maturity-onset diabetes of the young (MODY).
How our dietitians can help with diabetes:
A new diagnosis of diabetes can be overwhelming and scary. Our priority is to provide you with support by encouraging behaviours that you can control such as balanced meals, movement you enjoy (or at least don’t hate), regular eating and overall emotional well-being. We can also:
- Help you understand the relationship of diet to your specific diabetes diagnosis.
- Help guide you through blood glucose monitoring and what the numbers mean.
- Understand what impact your medications are having and how.
- Developing a lifestyle plan that includes food knowledge, teach you how to balance meals and carbohydrate awareness
- Learning how to eat with awareness and without guilt.
