Coeliac Disease
Coeliac disease (CD) is an autoimmune condition that permanently affects the digestive system where the immune system mounts a response to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, rye and oats. When a person with CD consumes foods that contain gluten, it causes an immune system reaction in the small intestine, which damages the lining of the small intestine. This can therefore affect the absorption of nutrients as well as being associated with other long term health outcomes.
Symptoms may include :
- Diarrhoea or constipation
- Stomach cramps
- Bloating and wind
- Fatigue, weakness and lethargy
- Nausea and vomiting
- Weight loss – but weight gain is also possible
- Anaemia
Fortunately, when gluten is removed from the diet the gut has a chance to heal and improve.
