Crohns and Ulcerative Colitis (UC)

Crohn’s Disease or Ulcerative Colitis are considered inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). For these patients proper nutritional care can be life-changing and even lifesaving. IBD causes an inflammation in your digestive tract and can make it more challenging to properly break down food and absorb the nutrients from it and also absorb and water, putting you at risk of nutritional deficiencies, weight loss and dehydration.

Symptoms may include :
  • Abdominal (tummy) or anal pain
  • Diarrhoea or loose stools that sometimes may also have blood and mucus
  • Weight loss
  • Fatigue

How our dietitians help with Crohn’s disease and Ulcerative Colitis:

  • Provide dietary recommendations for modified fibre intake pending on if you are in a flare up IBD state or if symptoms are managed.
  • Address any malabsorption vitamin and mineral deficiencies
  • Recommend probiotics or prebiotics if appropriate
  • Assist with managing gastrointestinal symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, flatulence, bloating, nausea, or vomiting
  • Work with you to tailor strategies for managing your nutrition when you are not feeling your best self, including meal planning, quick and easy options.
  • Where appropriate, provide guidance on following an Exclusive Enteral Nutrition (EEN) or Crohn’s Disease Exclusion Diet to induce remission
